Summer 2008 Reading Lists-Updated June 24, 2008
SOTA Summer Reading Requirement
Parent/Student Information Sheet
In response to parental and staff concerns regarding the need to encourage reading, all incoming and continuing SOTA students will be required to read two books over summer vacation—one required book and one book chosen from the attached list. Special Education Students will be expected to read only the required book.) There are separate lists for each grade level and for honors and Advanced Placement sections. Each student has been given the appropriate book list and directions for the at-home summer reading assignment which is required for each book.
These summer reading assignments will be collected on the first day of the fall semester that each English class meets. During the first week of classes, all students will be expected to write an in-class essay based upon their summer reading. The complete summer reading assignment (at-home assignment and in-class essay) counts for approximately 25% of each student's first marking period grade. This means that students who do not complete this assignment satisfactorily are unlikely to earn better than a "C" in English on their first report card of the year. Students who have qualified for honors and AP English or social studies courses but who do not complete the summer reading assignment satisfactorily will be removed from all of these advanced classes and placed into general classes.
The book lists and reading requirements are also posted on our school web site at: www.sfsota.org
