Mr. Erik Slayton 10th Grade World Arts

Course Description: The 10th Grade World Arts class is a global look at history with a focus on 1500s to the Present, with an emphasis on such themes as imperialism, colonialism, industrial revolution, totalitarianism and revolution while discussing such events as the Glorious Revolution, WWI and II, and nation building in Latin America. This year’s studies will be done through the arts and their relationship to the changing societies that produce them.

Assignments: Students will be required to participate in a variety of activities. This includes class discussion and lectures, group projects in and out of the class, group presentations, and all homework assignments. Students will also be required to do research projects that will involve presentation of material in both written and oral formats. Students will keep a notebook for journaling, note taking, readings, vocabulary, class notes and all other work outside of tests and research projects through out the year.

History Standards: The California State Standards emphasize: the influence of Greek and Roman philosophy in Western thought and religion, the Enlightenment and its effect on modern self-government the Age of Revolutions, Industrial Revolution in Asia, Europe and North America, Imperialism of Africa and Asia, WWI and its effects, WWII and its effects, and Nation building in Latin America, the Middle East, China and Africa.

Expected School wide Learning Results: All assignments are not only addressed to the standards but also to the ESLRs. The goal of education at SOTA is to produce good communicators, thinkers, developing artists, learners, community contributors and collaborative workers.

Grading: All grades are based on a direct point system. Every grading period students will be given a research project to turn in and present to the class, a variety of assignments for their notebook and a test.

Classroom Expectations:

1. Come to class prepared to work every day with books, pen and paper. Once class begins, no one is allowed to leave; this includes bathroom, locker, or any other business that should be taken care of during the passing times.

2. Every class period is an important part of your learning process. Therefore, your consistent attendance and timeliness is necessary to maintain a satisfactory grade. Any student that is 5 minutes late for class will be required to get a pass from the office. No absence will be excused until a note is brought from home and turned into the office. Students who are on time and attend class tend to have higher grades and competency is the subject area.

3. It is the responsibility of the student to get all make up work and turn it in on time, not the instructors.

4. There will be no late work. Every student will be given a chance to turn in one assignment late each grading period, this assignment can only be one day, not one class period, late.

5 Students are asked to respect the space by not defacing walls or desks and cleaning up their own trash.

6 Students are not allowed to bring food (this includes candy and gum) or drinks into class. Water will be permitted.

7 Use of headphones in not allowed during the academic mornings at SOTA.

8 All students will respect fellow students' opinions and ideas.

9 Only YOU are responsible for your actions and education.

I have read both the Syllabus and the Classroom Expectations thoroughly. I understand and accept what is going to be expected of any student during the upcoming school year in 10th Grade World Arts.
