Creative Writing has two distinct strands - Literary Arts and Spoken Arts.
Students who share a passion for writing enter the Creative Writing Department with fresh, raw voices, and leave with their skills honed, their styles refined, and their originality intact. The four-year program introduces young writers to a variety of instructors and teaching styles– focusing on three core areas: poetry, fiction, and playwriting.
Creative Writing students write from imagination and experience, across genres and contexts; they write alone, collaboratively, and with writers-in-residence. They design and publish independent literary journals and zines every year, and accept submissions from all students at Asawa SOTA. CW students, in a partnership with 826 Valencia, teach a middle school portfolio workshop and offer tutoring. They have their work published in national and international online and print venues. Three times a year, they host major reading events and present their work on the SOTA stage and at venues around the city.
