The Creative Writing department at Asawa SOTA offers two dynamic programs: Literary Arts (“writing for the page”) and Spoken Arts (“writing for the stage”). Students in both programs read outstanding literature from diverse traditions and strengthen their own writing in a community of supportive peers. Creative writers are inspired by imagination and experience; write across genres, languages, and contexts; and work alone, collaboratively, and with writers-in-residence.

Asawa SOTA Creative Writers edit, design and distribute the department's acclaimed literary journal, umläut, which accepts submissions from all  students, and host a student-run blog and website

CW Students in a partnership with 826 Valencia, teach a middle school portfolio workshop and offer tutoring. They have their work published in national and international online and print venues. Three times a year, they host major reading events and present their work on the SOTA stage and at venues around the city.
