SPOKEN ARTS

The Creative Writing department is thrilled to announce a new program, Spoken Arts, to complement our continuing Literary Arts curriculum. The Spoken Arts program invites students to see themselves as part of San Francisco’s multiethnic, multilingual lineage of writing and performance for personal and community transformation. This interdisciplinary new program offers students the opportunity to develop and share their unique voices as writers and performers of spoken-word/oral poetry, personal narratives, radio/podcasts, speeches, monologues, and oral histories. Students will be encouraged to write in the languages, dialects, and/or hybrid forms that best express their experiences.

The Creative Writing Department at Asawa SOTA seeks young writers of diverse backgrounds who see the world around them as a living text--who want to examine, challenge, and celebrate not only what they get from it, but what they give to it. Dynamic classes taught by professional writer-performers will integrate cultural studies and writing as resistance into the workshop- and text-/performance-based curriculum. For more information about Creative Writing at Asawa SOTA, and for audition portfolio requirements, please see http://sotacw.org/about/auditioning/.
