Directed by Andrea Hinman, the Asawa SOTA Dance Department prepares students to pursue careers and degrees in the field of dance.  This program emphasizes a strong technical foundation and includes the regular study of ballet, modern/jazz/blues, and contemporary styles of dance, as well as training in choreography and composition.

Master classes in a range of styles– salsa, Afro-Haitian, hip-hop, and others– provide students with a well-rounded dance education. Students train with the top dance teachers and artists-in-residence in the Bay Area, at the professional studios of ODC and Lines Ballet.

SOTA Dance was established in 1982 by one of the original founding artists of the School of the Arts and renowned Dance educator, Elvia Marta, who served as the Department Director for 34 years, until her retirement in May 2016. Students interested in dance styles and traditions from a global perspective should visit World Music & Dance.
