Theatre Technology

The Theatre Design and Technology Department is a unique pre-professional program that offers students an opportunity to explore and develop their skills in the art of scenic design, costume design and construction, sound and lighting design, set construction and painting, graphic design and stage and house management.

For admission into this program it is recommended that a student have at least one year of previous experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture)
  • Mechanical Drawing or Drafting
  • Stage Crew (set construction, painting, stage management)
  • Performer (actor, dancer or singer)

On audition Day:

  • Students must bring samples of your work including sketches, drawings, samples of carpentry, sewing crafts or other pieces of artwork and be prepared to discuss them. This work should demonstrate the student's interest, experience and skill in some aspect of theatre design and technology.

  • Students will interview with the "Tech" Director and artists-in-residence and are given an oral or written diagnostic assessment to determine their knowledge of theatre technology and the ability to think creatively, finding design solutions for a set of challenges.

About the Theatre Design and Technology Department:

SOTA's Theatre Design and Technology Department is a multi-faceted department that allows students to participate, first hand, the magic of theatrical and other productions. Students take part in all areas of theater production including lighting, sound, set design and construction, stage and house management, make-up and performance, and must be able to work independently and in groups to complete time-sensitive projects.

The "Tech" department seeks a balance of these skills so that students may work together for optimal collaborative creations.
