The Vocal, Classical, and Musical Theatre Department programs encourage the development of the complete singer.  The Classical strand is rooted in the study of European classical literature, world music, and Twentieth Century music with extended study in jazz, musical theatre, pop, and gospel. The Musical Theatre strand includes instruction in all aspects of theatre production including acting, singing, dancing, and technical production.

All students in the department are required to perform in both solo and ensemble settings.  SOTA Vocal students collaborate well with others and are self-motivated, responsible, and dedicated to advancing their artistry in a rigorous pre-professional musical environment.

The classically based SOTA Choral and Voice programs encourage the development of the complete singer.  The required curriculum includes participation in the chorus (members qualify to sing in performances) and involvement in labs (often in collaboration with student pianists, emphasizing solo art songs).  Other labs include select choral ensembles, select solos, small ensembles, and other vocal projects.  Required program elements include written theory, sight singing, concert attendance, and community involvement.

Students in good standing enjoy a wide array of additional musical opportunities including tours, festivals, competitions, recording sessions, and leadership development through an elected student executive board as well as assistant conductor and section leader positions.  Special seminars on topics such as diction and vocal technique are also available.  Guest artists may perform and/or present material of interest and relevance.  All members will actively contribute to the music community through concert attendance and performance/teaching offers.
