World Music (new in 2012)

World Music Audition Requirements

Who should apply?

Students who have a strong desire to learn about the music of world cultures.  Students do not need to have prior musical background nor proficiency in a musical instrument.

What will students learn in this program?

The World Music program has a kinesthetic approach to music learning.  Much of the focus in music of other cultures is not the music itself, but the sense of community amongst the musicians.  Students will use their body, mind and spirit in getting to know their peers and in learning the diversity of world music.  Students will have access to SOTA’s rigorous academic schedule in the morning.  In the afternoon, students will study non-Western and Western forms of music.  There will be numerous performing opportunities at school and in the community.

Students will have hands-on experience learning the following:

Taiko Drumming
Indonesian Gamelan and Chant
Afro-Cuban drumming
Filipino Tinikling
Classical Indian Music
Piano
Guitar
