Piano Audition Requirements
The SOTA Piano Department is looking for students who demonstrate an intermediate/advanced level of technique and sight-reading skill; an understanding of period style and character of the work performed; sensitivity of touch and tonal beauty; and a passion for the music performed.
Students auditioning must be here on the appointed day and time. Missed audition appointments are difficult to reschedule.
Auditioning students are be asked to prepare for the following:
- Play two pieces from contrasting periods (example: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, etc.). Both pieces should be well rehearsed and memorized.
- Play scales and arpeggios as directed in major and minor keys up to 5 sharps or flats. These should be played hands together with correct fingering, four octaves up and down in parallel motion.
- Sight-read a piece, selected by the audition committee, at the level of a Bach minuet.
On Audition Day you must bring:
- A resume of your musical experience. List music classes, ensembles, private study personal performances, chamber music ensemble experiences and competitions.
- Two readable copies of the music you will perform.
Students who do not bring these materials to the audition will not be able to audition.
About the Piano Department
The Piano Department focuses on European Classical and Twentieth Century Music. The curriculum includes training for solos, two piano duos and chamber music. Weekly classes are offered in theory, improvisation, performance, vocal accompaniment including AP music theory and composition. Students are required to perform in two piano recitals a year and by selection chamber music and vocal concerts. Students may also participate in SOTA Jazz ensembles and Seniors participate in a service learning program within the SOTA community. Entering SOTA piano students collaborate well with others, are self-motivated, responsible and dedicated to advancing their artistry in a rigorous, pre-professional, musical environment.
