Welcome to Spoken Arts!
The Ruth Asawa SOTA Spoken Arts Department is a community of spoken artists dedicated to cultivating quality writing for the page and stage through rigorous study and community-building. The Spoken Arts Department is motivated by the belief that speaking the truth can change our lives and change the world. All students are expected to uphold the principles of a beloved community, which includes challenging oppression based on class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, ability, language, citizenship status, and religion.
Students who wish to craft their own unique and powerful voice through writing for performance and community-building, including spoken word poetry, rap, theater, and storytelling, will find a home in Spoken Arts!
Spoken Arts bridges writing and performance to the world beyond Ruth Asawa SOTA. Spoken Arts students teach workshops at local middle schools and perform at community events around the Bay Area.
