College Advising

Gordon Chalmers serves the SOTA students and parents as the College Counselor, a role that covers all aspects of the college application process. Responsibilities of Mr. Chalmers includes classroom presentations on college, college entrance test coordination, visits by college representatives, application workshops, individual meetings with students regarding college, parent meeting presentations, school reports (school recommendations) scholarships and awards, and graduation.

Mr. Chalmers can be found in the College Center during the morning break and during lunch on days when he is at school. The days of the week when Mr. Chalmers is at school to assist students and parents varies from week to week. His schedule of the week is posted on the door to his office and in the daily school bulletin. Mr. Chalmers can be reached at 415.695.5700 (school) and by e-mail at GAChalmers@aol.com.

Advantages of the ACT:
1. Accepted by most schools in the U.S. and all schools in Calif.
2. Can be substituted for the SAT if scores on the ACT are higher
3. Students not penalized for guessing, as they are on the SAT
4. More varied as the ACT includes verbal. math, reading and science reasoning, while the SAT includes only verbal and math

Students can register for the ACT and the SAT two ways:
1. By mailing in the applications (they are in my office along with instructions and study books
2. Register on line which is easier, more efficient and more reliable.

Fees:
ACT - $26.00
SAT I - $28.50
SAT II
(subject tests) - writing test - $16.00 and other tests are $8.00 each.
For most colleges, three SAT II tests are required (Writing, Math and a subject of their choosing.
Students who want to late register for both tests have to pay a $18.00 late fee, and they can do standby registration, if they miss the late deadline, by going to a test center and hope there is space. Standby registration is $30.00 more
